What makes a Bygone sash window so secure?

A sash window needs to pass BS7950 before it can be considered secure; at least that’s the view of the police force. The Bygone Collection was the first sash window (of any material) to pass this new British Standard for sash windows in 2006 and shortly after obtained the “Secured by Design” endorsement.

VERY few sash window companies even know of the requirement let alone have been tested.

To achieve the Secure by Design endorsement Bygone sash windows were subjected to vigorous attacks with each corner and locking point being tested in turn. The objective was to weaken joints and to force an entry.

The force used during this “attack” was the equivalent of four 12 stone men hanging all their weight downward, with another one and a half men attempting to force the sash horizontally.

Bygone sash windows passed with flying colours. We’d love to tell you here, all the design features but many companies wait for Bygone to publish how it passed the tests before they embark on the project, so forgive the fact we’ve held back telling you every little detail. Your local installer however will be pleased to show you precisely why these windows pass the security tests and other fail.

Two of the critical areas however are the cam catches and keeps…

  • Unique to Bygone sash windows are the opposite handed cams (on larger) windows which centralize the sashes in the frame preventing them from being forced to one side of the window, which weakens it and allows easy entry.
  • Solid cast brass keeps are secured with four fixing screws. Two vertically and two horizontally into steel reinforcement to maximum ability to resist shear forces. The majority of keeps on other windows are just screwed to the PVC-U beading, which in testing has proven to take less than 15 seconds to break into!
  • With matching scroll handles ring pulls and child limit stops, they’re available in a range of scrumptious colours, each unique to Bygone, beautifully aged Antique Brass, Opulent metallic Pewter, the crisp brightness of chrome for that truly contemporary feel or a gloss white to match the wood white acrylic timber perfectly.
Peace of mind security

Bygone sash windows give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you, your home and your loved ones are secured by the first sash window to obtain the Secure by Design endorsement from the Police.
