So Energy efficient and environmentally friendly?

Window designers have new challenges from those of our forefathers. The basic requirement to keep wind and rain out and let the sunlight in remains the same, but today we have new concerns like global warming.

Why then did it take until the late 1960's early 70's before conservation of energy to become important...answer because they didn't care about the resources, they were plentiful and renewable.

When resource is plentiful (coal, timber, oil etc) prices are low, wastage accepted, and usage goes unmeasured.

Today the world has new demands. The world does not have infinite resources, deforestation is stripping vast quantities of hard wood for ever, animals face distinction like the orangutans in Borneo, the world is warming, sea levels are rising, we have a duty to humanity to behave differently to our forefathers.

We must all conserve the heat we produce, the energy used in doing so, and slow rise in CO2 emmissions.

The Bygone Collection was the first window of any kind to obtain certification from the Energy Savings Trust.

Energy Savings Trust Recommended
According to the Energy Savings Trust 20% of the heat lost from an average home occurs through the windows and for traditional single glazed sliding sash windows the figure is much higher.

Only companies whose products that have proven they are the best in their class for saving energy, can use their "recommended" logo.

Energy Savings Trust recommends Bygone (C rated) sash windows, because they are proven to reduce heat loss by 74%*, which means significant savings in energy, heating bills and natural resources. The B rated window saves even more.

Thermally Efficient Glass
Today it is possible to apply special coatings to glass surfaces, to either absorb or reflect the heat from the sun, to prevent dirt sticking, In addition to safety feature like toughened or laminated

Unsurprisingly, then that glass is a critical component in sash window production, your installer can offer a range of leading edge glass combinations to ensure the best and most appropriate glass is available whatever you requirement.

All Bygone sash windows have triple chambered sash profiles for superior thermal properties, low iron glass on the outside hard coat Low E glass inside. Combined with an argon-filled sealed unit, it means that energy loss is kept to a bare minimum.

Recycling
Recycling waste has always been an important part of The Bygone Collection manufacturing process, even before it became fashionable. For years, productions off cuts have been returned for reuse, which avoids contributing to the growing land fill problem.

Post consumer waste", basically 1980's "mistakes" where inappropriate PVC-U windows were installed are now being removed, recycled and reused, once again avoiding land fill and reducing the demand on precious natural resources.

Again you installer should be able to provide any answers you have, on how the recycle the materials.

Greener PVC
Since PVC was first extruded, Lead has been needed as a stabiliser. However just as lead in paint and petrol is undesirable so it is with PVC-u.

Rest assured your new bygone sash windows would be lead free as we now use calcium as an organic substitute.

And that's not all, tests are well under way to use substitute fossil fuels with natural oils such as rape seed oil

Mean while you'll enjoy sash windows that harmonise with your home, retain its value, that save virtually all the heat and carbon that would have otherwise polluted the environment, raising global temperatures still further.
