Energy saving
Window designers have new challenges from those of our forefathers. The basic requirement to keep wind and rain out and let the sunlight in remains the same, but today we have new concerns like global warming.
Today the world has new demands. The world does not have infinite resources, deforestation is stripping vast quantities of hard wood for ever, animals face extinction like the orangutans in Borneo, the world is warming, sea levels are rising, we have a duty to humanity to behave differently to our forefathers. We must all conserve the heat we produce, the energy used in doing so, and slow rise in CO2 emmissions. The Bygone Collection was the first window of any kind to obtain certification from the Energy Savings Trust.
Energy Savings Trust Recommended
All Bygone PVC-U Sash Windows have a Window Energy Rating (WER) of B as standard. Our Wooden Sash Windows have been awarded Window Energy Ratings of C for the Weights & Pulleys version and B for the conventional spring balanced option.
According to the Energy Savings Trust 20% of the heat lost from an average home occurs through the windows and for traditional single glazed sliding sash windows the figure is much higher. Only companies whose products have proven they are the best in their class can use their 'recommended' logo. The Energy Savings Trust recommends Bygone (B rated) sash windows, because they are proven to reduce heat loss by more than 74%*, which means significant savings in energy, heating bills and natural resources.
These savings are for ever, not some overnight wonder. Todays energy efficient sash windows will deliver these huge savings, day after day every month every year, so your descendants will thank you for slowing decelerating the pace of emissions.

Recycling
Recycling waste has always been an important part of The Bygone Collection manufacturing process, even before it became fashionable. For years, productions off cuts have been returned for reuse, which avoids contributing to the growing land fill problem. Post consumer waste”, basically 1980’s “mistakes” where inappropriate PVC-U windows were installed are now being removed, recycled and reused, once again avoiding land fill and reducing the demand on precious natural resources. Again you installer should be able to provide any answers you have, on how the recycle the materials.
Beware
Many companies will claim, sometimes deliberately and sometimes in sheer ignorance, that their sash windows are energy rated or EST recommended when they are not. Sometimes this is because their standard casements are BFRC rated, but sash windows find it harder to meet the criteria for energy ratings and not all companies have been able to achieve a C rating or above. Always check any claims made (including ours) on the BFRC or Energy Savings Trust Websites.
